Green-winged Orchid (Anacamptis morio)
This was a target species in 2019, but there are still plenty of sites to check up on this year, as we feel it is still under-recorded. This is a small purple orchid with distinctive green-striped wings, which grows in ‘good’ species-rich meadows (often with Cowslips), in pastures and rocky hillsides, mainly on calcareous soils. May is the best month to search for it and by mid-June it has usually gone past its best.
Put all the information – finder, date, place, grid ref and any other details – population, other associated species etc. on a Somerset Occasional Records Form (available on the ‘Recording’ tab of the SRPG website) and send your records to me as it will help with the targeting list for next year, when hopefully, we will be free to search for this and other species at our leisure.
Best wishes to you all
